Coordinator for the Southern Border Comments on Immigration

Ambassador Roberta Jacobson comments on Biden's immigration plan

The Biden administration receives criticism for immigration policies

It is no secret that a main pillar for the current president of the US, Joe Biden, is immigration, but he has a diametrically opposite approach to this sector compared to his predecessor, former President Donald Trump. Biden’s stance on immigration is quite welcoming and he plans to expand visa programs available to foreign workers and restructure humanitarian programs available to the most vulnerable immigrant communities.

Since the Trump administration used every tool at its disposal to reduce immigration in the US, Biden’s plans could appear extremely flexible, according to the opinion of several opposition groups.

In fact, the Biden administration is currently facing a gigantic controversy over a significant increase in irregular immigration. Opposition groups criticize the current president for promising better conditions and offering public benefits to undocumented immigrants. They state that Biden’s immigration proposals are putting border security and the well-being of the local population at risk.

In response to these comments, the Biden administration is also using all the tools at its disposal to prevent an immigration crisis at the borders and keep border restrictions related to the global Coronavirus pandemic in place.

Ambassador Roberta Jacobson comments on Biden’s immigration plan

Ambassador Roberta Jacobson, who is currently the Coordinator for the Southern Border, commented on Biden’s immigration plans during a press conference on Wednesday, March 10, 2021.

Initially, Jacobson stated that reforming the immigration system will take a long time because the Trump administration hindered most immigration processes and hampered alternatives so that future administrations could not easily modify many of its restrictive policies.

Therefore, the Ambassador explained that the Biden administration will take a considerable period of time to be able to remove limitations implemented by the previous administration on the immigration sector and pave the way to promote comprehensive immigration reform.

Adding to that, Jacobson stated that the current administration is carrying out several strategies to improve the quality of life of Central American citizens to handle irregular immigration from its root causes and prevent minors and entire families from making dangerous journeys to cross borders without legal documentation. In fact, the Biden administration plans to invest $4 billion over the next four years to address main causes of mass migration such as violence, civil war, corruption, lack of employment opportunities, inter alia.

Ambassador sends clear message regarding irregular immigration

Although Ambassador Jacobson commented on Biden’s plans to improve the immigration system, she also emphasized that the US borders are currently closed due to the health crisis and that irregular immigration will not be admitted under any circumstances.

In fact, she openly stated, “Neither this announcement nor any of the other measures suggest that anyone, especially children and families with young children, should make the dangerous trip to try and enter the U.S. in an irregular fashion. The border is not open.”
