Could Republican Members Support Immigration Reform after Census Results?
Census results highlight the need to expand immigration
The Census results have made national news for the past week. This is because the US’ birth rate and population growth has declined considerably over the last decade. To understand the repercussions of this result, it is important to explain that the National Census takes place every 10 years and has multiple purposes such as, among many other things, analyzing the economy’s behavior in relation to the population density of each state, as well as distributing seats in Congress.
The 2020 National Census revealed that the US’ population growth was the lowest since 1930 and the second lowest in Census history. This result raises several questions regarding the repercussions it might create over the next decades. For instance, by 2030, one in five Americans will be of retirement age, but without population growth commensurate with this number, the nation’s economy will suffer a rather alarming decline.

Thus, the real question is, what does the US need to do to boost population growth without forcing local families to have children if it is not their plan? The answer from several studies, experts and research is, naturally, legal immigration.

Could Republican members of Congress support comprehensive immigration overhaul?
The Census results indicate that the best way to balance the working-age population and the retirement-age population over the next several decades is to increase immigration levels through legal programs. This strategy would allow the local government to attract talent from abroad to boost the economy and, at the same time, increase the birth rate over the next decade, welcoming a new generation of multicultural workers.
In fact, the Census results could not have been released at a better time because there are currently several immigration bills under Congressional review, which, if approved, would lead to comprehensive immigration reform.
However, the current administration of the US, led by Democratic President Joe Biden, needs bipartisan support in Congress for some of these proposals to become law. The question regarding this fact is, would certain Republican members be willing to support Biden’s welcoming immigration plans taking into account the Census results?
According to a recent report by The Hill, the Census results also changed the distribution of seats in Congress, so the Biden administration will now have to use other tools to gain bipartisan support in both the US House of Representatives and in the Senate.
Currently, given low population growth, it is time for the US to improve its immigration system to simplify existing processes and keep the economy afloat for decades to come with the help of foreign workforce, which has always contributed to the socio-economic development of the nation.
