Could the Path to Citizenship Boost the Economy?
The Biden administration includes immigration resolution in budget package
The Biden Administration is not giving up on the ideal of offering a path to permanent residency and eventually citizenship to immigrants residing in the US undocumented, provided they meet certain eligibility requirements.
President Biden explains that, aside from the fact that the US has been an immigrant nation throughout history, undocumented foreigners have also become a pillar for the country’s socioeconomic development as they are, in their vast majority, essential workers in all sorts of sectors of the local market.
However, due to Republican filibuster, the Biden administration has been unable to gain bipartisan support in Congress to be able to open a path to citizenship. Therefore, Biden recently included an immigration resolution in the budget package, which could be passed through the reconciliation process.
The reconciliation process would allow the Biden administration to pass the budget package by getting only 51 votes in Congress, instead of 60. In the 2022 budget proposal, Biden included a path to citizenship for certain undocumented immigrants and the implementation of new border protection methods. This proposal is still under congressional review.

Opposition groups do not support this idea
Naturally, opposition groups and certain Republican members of Congress disagree with including an immigration section in the budget package, primarily because, in their view, opening a path to citizenship for undocumented foreigners would not benefit the economy. But, is that really the case?

- A recent study conducted by the Center for American Progress reveals that, if the Biden administration succeeds in legalizing all undocumented immigrants, the GDP (Gross Domestic Product) would increase $1.7 trillion over the next 10 years and there would be 438,800 new jobs for the local population.
- In December 2020, FWD.US published the results of an investigation, which revealed that 5.2 million undocumented immigrants work in essential sectors in the midst of the health crisis caused by the global Coronavirus pandemic.
- The same research revealed that 69% of immigrants residing in the country undocumented are absolutely essential to overcome the health crisis.
- A study released in late 2020 shows that, although undocumented immigrants represent only 3.2% of the American population, they make up 4.4% of the total local workforce.
