COVID-19 Vaccine Delivery Should Include Immigrant Communities
Immigrant communities amid the global pandemic
Immigrant communities, especially those undocumented, have been tremendously affected by policies of the Trump government amid the global Coronavirus pandemic. Despite the health risk, the current administration of the US used all the tools at its disposal to deport as many undocumented immigrants as possible.
Adding to that, several policies implemented by the Trump administration substantially reduce benefits and alternatives for the most vulnerable immigrant communities. Thus, fearing deportation and trying to protect their immigration status, hundreds of foreigners avoided using medical services or seeking specialized assistance amid the global pandemic.
This undoubtedly increased the risk since they:
- Can become carriers of the virus by not seeking medical assistance in times of crisis, which could lead to another massive outbreak of Coronavirus.
- Normally live in overcrowded areas, where there is not enough space to have social distancing, which is the main recommendation of the World Health Organization (WHO). That could lead to a massive health emergency if they don’t use medical services for fear of deportation.
- A large percentage of undocumented immigrants work in important sectors of the local market such as the US food supply chain, construction, the health system, inter alia. Therefore, since they are essential to protect the economy in times of crisis, they should be able to receive medical services.
It is important to clarify that immigrant communities are not alone as dozens of humanitarian organizations, immigrant rights advocates, activist groups and immigration attorneys have fought tirelessly against policies of the Trump administration during the global health crisis.

Immigrant communities should be included in the distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine
It has already been 11 months since the first case of Coronavirus reached the North American territory and the US is preparing today to deliver the first doses of the most effective vaccine against COVID-19.
However, it is essential that the vaccine distribution is equitable among all residents of the country, including the most vulnerable immigrant communities. It is important that President Trump, or President-elect Joe Biden (who will take office in January 2021), includes them in vaccination projects to prevent another massive outbreak and avoid discrimination between the American population and immigrant communities.
Hundreds of immigrants fear contact with any federal entity, local medical services and law enforcement agencies, which could delay the vaccination process and affect the economic progress needed to overcome the current crisis.
Therefore, it is the local government’s duty to establish parameters for multicultural inclusion and not to neglect immigrants who currently reside in the US, who also contribute to the socioeconomic development of local companies and, therefore, of the nation.
