DACA Recipients are Present in Different Sectors

DACA recipients are part of multiple sectors

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals – Brief Explanation

Within the many immigrant communities in the US, there is one known as Dreamers. This term refers to young immigrants who came to the country without legal documentation when they were minors. Many of them do not even remember what their countries of origin look like because they were brought to the US as infants or toddlers.

In 2012, in an attempt to protect Dreamers, the Barack Obama administration implemented a program called DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals). This immigration benefit offers protection from deportation for two years to certain eligible Dreamers, with the possibility of extension, and allows them to apply for legal employment permits and access other public and social services.

Currently, DACA covers more than 650,000 young immigrants, who have also become a fundamental part of the US workforce. This is because DACA recipients work in different sectors of the local market and there are no mandatory requirements for them to apply to all kinds of jobs.

Trump’s battle to eradicate DACA

The Trump administration never agreed with offering legal alternatives to immigrants who cross the US borders without prior authorization, regardless of whether they are minors or not.

Thus, during Donald Trump’s term (2017-2021), DACA was on the tightrope multiple times and several courts intervened in the dispute between the previous administration and immigrant rights advocates, who state that deporting DACA recipients would be tremendously damaging to the local economic system and “inhumane” as they could face risky situations in an unfamiliar environment.

In fact, the controversy surrounding DACA was so great that it even reached the US Supreme Court of Justice, which ruled in favor of Dreamers in June 2020.

Biden protects DACA recipients

The current administration of the US, headed by President Joe Biden, has a different view on immigration and states that DACA is a program that greatly benefits the country and that protecting immigrant youth is a strategy that will bring positive results for the socio-economic development of local companies.

In fact, on his first day in office, January 20, 2021, President Biden signed a memorandum directing his team to review the DACA program and make necessary adjustments to improve and expand alternatives available to Dreamers.

DACA recipients are part of multiple sectors

The reason why DACA is important to the local economic system is precisely because Dreamers work in all kinds of sectors, from the healthcare system and education, to the US food supply chain and sports. Thus, over time, DACA recipients have become an essential part of the local workforce, constantly driving the economy in different areas of society.

DACA recipients are a priority for the Biden administration, which recognizes the real impact of immigration on the economy, and plans to offer a path to citizenship for Dreamers who meet certain eligibility requirements.
