DACA Recipients Celebrate New DHS Head Appointment
DACA under the Trump administration
Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) is an immigration benefit implemented in 2012 by the Barack Obama administration. Basically, this program protects young immigrants from deportation, who came to the US without legal documentation when they were minors.
Currently, DACA protects approximately 700,000 immigrants and allows them to apply for employment and study permits. Some of them can also get a Social Security Number (SSN) and renew DACA every two years.
However, DACA has been on the tightrope for the past four years because the current administration of the US, led by President Donald Trump, disagrees with offering immigration benefits to immigrants who cross the country’s borders without legal documentation, including minors.
In the Trump administration’s view, offering alternatives to undocumented immigrants would incentivize and increase illegal immigration, which could be extremely damaging to the local economic system.

The population chose the Democratic nominee
Despite President Trump seeking a second term, American citizens elected Joe Biden, the Democratic candidate, as the 46th president of the US. Biden plans to protect DACA and expand benefits offered to young people covered by this program, commonly known as “Dreamers”.
As the new government is entering the transition period, the president-elect recently announced who would hold important positions. For instance, Biden announced that Alejandro Mayorkas will be the head of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

“Dreamers” celebrate the appointment of Mayorkas
Since Mayorkas is the first Latino, who comes from an immigrant family, to hold this position in the US, hundreds of DACA recipients celebrated this news and congratulated the Cuban-American on his appointment.
It is important to remember that Mayorkas was the director of the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) during Barack Obama’s term. Hence, he helped structure DACA and offer protection to undocumented youth.
A DACA recipient stated last Monday: “(Mayorkas) came to the United States as a refugee. His family left his country so that he could have better opportunities here, just like our families (…) I think he can feel identified with us.”
This is truly hopeful news for DACA recipients, who have had to face a seemingly endless legal battle under the Donald Trump administration.
