DACA’s 8th Anniversary in the US

DACA is celebrating its 8th anniversary and might be removed

DACA celebrates its eight anniversary

It is well known that the last two administrations of the US have been very different, especially regarding the ideals of immigration in the country.

The current government of the US, headed by President Donald Trump, considers that immigration (both legal and illegal) has negative repercussions for the country’s economy.

On the other hand, the predecessor government, headed by President Barack Obama, considered that immigration has very positive aspects for the country and beneficial effects on the economy.

That is why President Obama always tried to implement benefit programs for immigrants, including undocumented immigrants who crossed the borders illegally.

One of the programs launched by the Obama administration was DACA.

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) is a program for immigrants who came to the US when they were minors but did not have legal documentation.

This benefit protects against deportation and allows undocumented immigrants to file a petition for legal residency with the US Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS).

DACA celebrated its 8th anniversary on June 15, 2020. This generated nostalgia among the immigrant communities that benefit from this program since it is currently at risk of being eradicated.

The Trump government’s request to remove DACA

The current administration in the US is very strict in its views regarding illegal immigration.

President Trump has mentioned repeatedly that anyone who dares to cross borders illegally should not, under any circumstances, be able to apply for legal residence or citizenship in the US.

In fact, Trump’s administration considers deportation the best sanction to be used with undocumented immigrants.

Therefore, since 2017, the President has attempted to remove DACA from the benefits offered to immigrants residing in the country.

The controversy has been gigantic because this program still protects thousands of immigrants and activists also complain about the measures taken by the current government of the US.

DACA suspension

Nowadays, the DACA program is not active for new applications, but people who are protected under that benefit can continue to use it within the limits of its validity and expiration.

The intervention of the Supreme Court

Due to the fact that Trump’s government wants to remove DACA, but immigrant rights advocates have filed multiple lawsuits against this petition, the US Supreme Court of Justice decided to intervene in November 2019.

The Supreme Court announced that it will give an official response on the future of DACA during June 2020.

Thousands of immigrants are still patiently waiting for the Supreme Court’s response.
