The Biden administration must implement the MPP policy again

What is the MPP and what is its purpose?

The MPP policy, also known as “Remain in Mexico”, was initially implemented by the Trump administration in 2019 with the intention of curbing the entry of asylum seekers into the US.

Broadly speaking, this rule states that asylum seekers must remain in Mexican territory until they receive a response to their immigration cases, which usually takes a considerable period of time.

Given the poor and risky conditions in which asylum seekers lived in Mexico under the MPP, President Biden suspended this policy during his first days in office and subsequently gave the green light to rescind it permanently.

However, the Supreme Court’s order reverses Biden’s actions on this program and once again forces hundreds of thousands of asylum seekers to remain in Mexico.

Democrats urge Biden to fight against the MPP policy

Since the Supreme Court upheld and supported the Texas judge’s decision regarding the “Remain in Mexico” program, several Democratic leaders and immigrant rights advocates have called on the Biden administration to act promptly to fight against the re-implementation of this “anti-immigrant and draconian” policy.

To give a specific example, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman, who belongs to the Democratic political party, stated on Wednesday, August 25 that the current administration has the duty, the moral obligation and the means to “curtail and put a lawful end to the implementation of this disgraceful policy”.

Adding to that, other political leaders have argued that this policy was ineffective and that its initial implementation was illegitimate and baseless.
