DHS determination benefiting Afghans
According to statements made by Alejandro Mayorkas, Secretary of DHS, this decision to grant TPS seeks to provide security to people from Afghanistan who had to be evacuated due to current conditions in that country.
In addition, Mayorkas assures that the evacuees have no guarantees to return to their country of origin, so they must remain in the US at least temporarily.
It is for this reason that DHS granted TPS for 18 months starting March 15 for Afghans who meet the selection criteria to receive this immigration benefit.

The conditions included in TPS
It is worth mentioning that TPS is a humanitarian tool that provides immigration relief to people coming from countries undergoing extreme conditions such as natural disasters or wars that threaten their inhabitants.
DHS is the entity in charge of determining which countries may apply for this benefit, as well as the time of validity, which may be of 6, 12 and 18 months. This duration also applies to possible renewals and extensions.

Organizations call for expanded legal conditions for Afghans
This decision by DHS comes after several refugee advocacy organizations called on the Biden administration to open a pathway for Afghan evacuees to apply for lawful permanent residency.
Currently, Congress is evaluating a bill called Afghan Adjustment Act (AAA), which would open the door to naturalization for Afghan refugees as requested by advocacy organizations.
