Biden Grants TPS to Migrants from the Republic of the Union of Myanmar

On Friday, March 12, 2021, the DHS (Department of Homeland Security) announced that it will grant TPS (Temporary Protected Status) to nationals of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, also known as Burma, a country located in Southeast Asia.

It is important to clarify that TPS is an immigration benefit that offers protection from deportation to nationals of certain countries, who currently reside in the US. The DHS secretary is the person in charge of choosing TPS beneficiary countries and the duration of the permit.

Countries designated by DHS usually go through difficult situations such as epidemics, natural disasters, extreme weather conditions, ongoing armed conflict, inter alia. Apart from that, TPS beneficiaries also have the possibility to apply for an EAD (Employment Authorization Document) and access other public services.

Current DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas granted TPS to Myanmar nationals for 18 months “Due to the military coup and security forces’ brutal violence against civilians, the people of Burma are suffering a complex and deteriorating humanitarian crisis in many parts of the country.”

Biden also protects nationals from other countries

The current administration of the US, headed by President Joe Biden, has the purpose of protecting the well-being and safety of the most vulnerable immigrant communities, which were, in its opinion, tremendously affected by rules, restrictions and policies implemented by Former President Trump on the immigration system.
