DHS Protects Program for Foreign Entrepreneurs
What are the options for international entrepreneurs?
One of the most striking aspects of the US is its immigration system. This is because, being a first world country and a world power, it has the possibility and the resources to offer a wide variety of options to all kinds of foreign communities, from highly qualified workers in areas such as science, to people fleeing risky situations and in need of international assistance.
However, despite having a fairly extensive immigration system, the US still does not have a visa program available for foreign entrepreneurs, unlike countries like China or Canada. It is important to understand that the role of entrepreneurs on the economy is absolutely essential, especially since they create innovative projects and found usually small and medium-sized companies, but with a fairly high growth projection. Therefore, they create jobs for the American population in the short and medium term and constantly stimulate economic flow.
Currently, the only alternative available to foreign entrepreneurs is to enter the US through different visa programs, whether they are options based on family ties, employment or study, and then apply to the IER (International Entrepreneur Rule), which allows them to reside in the country without a visa for up to five years, so long as they meet certain eligibility criteria.
Although this rule could be very useful for foreign entrepreneurs, it is not as popular as other immigration programs and, thus, the USCIS (US Citizenship and Immigration Services) does not receive many applications for this benefit, which was implemented in 2017. Adding to that, in 2018, the Trump administration proposed to remove it from programs available to foreigners through a notice of proposed rulemaking.
DHS decides to protect program for foreign entrepreneurs
In one of our most recent articles, we talked about the IER, also known as the International Entrepreneur Parole Program, and how the Biden administration is reviewing the possibility of reviving and boosting this program to attract talent from abroad and protect the economy with the help of international entrepreneurs.
In fact, the USCIS recently announced that the DHS (Department of Homeland Security) officially withdrew Trump’s proposed rulemaking that put the IER at risk. Now, the Biden administration hopes to expand this program so that the USCIS receives more applications and foreign entrepreneurs can stay in the US while their businesses grow and become a public benefit.
Adding to that, the USCIS Acting Director openly openly, “Immigrants in the United States have a long history of entrepreneurship, hard work, and creativity, and their contributions to this nation are incredibly valuable (…)The International Entrepreneur parole program goes hand-in-hand with our nation’s spirit of welcoming entrepreneurship and USCIS encourages those who are eligible to take advantage of the program”.
