Alejandro Mayorkas comments on immigration in the US

On Monday, March 1, 2021, the Secretary of DHS (Department of Homeland Security), Alejandro Mayorkas, commented on the US immigration system during a press conference.

Mayorkas stated that the previous administration, led by former President Donald Trump, tremendously damaged the immigration system and implemented restrictive policies that affected communities trying to flee precarious situations in their countries of origin. Mayorkas assured that the Biden administration has a clear intention to improve the immigration sector and reorganize humanitarian alternatives available to the most vulnerable immigrant populations, but that “It takes time to rebuild the system from scratch.”

Adding to that, Mayorkas stated that the current government plans to implement policies that allow more humane, orderly and safe immigration processes, but also sent a clear message to immigrants who are arriving at the US borders. The DHS secretary advised immigrants not to arrive at the borders expecting to enter the country immediately because, following the recommendation of the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), the Biden administration will have to return them on grounds of health emergency.

Other than that, Mayorkas also explained that the Trump administration “dismantled our nation’s immigration system,” and reforming it will take time and is quite a difficult task because there are minors involved and thousands of immigrants trying to flee adverse situations. However, Mayorkas openly stated that the US first needs to have a well-structured immigration system in order to assist people in need of international protection in the midst of a global pandemic.
