Diversity: An Essential Role in the 2020 National Census
National Census reveals growing diversity
The National Census takes place every 10 years and one of its purposes, among many other things, is to measure the US’ population density and to analyze different variables in each state. The 2020 National Census figures have been a topic of discussion during the first half of 2021, especially because there have been several factors that drastically changed population behavior in the last decade.
For instance, population growth between 2010 and 2020 was only 7.4%, the lowest figure since 1930. Adding to that, The Washington Post recently published a report related to the 2020 National Census results, which reveals that diversity was strongly connected to population growth over the last decade.
In fact, for the first time in Census history (since 1790), populations identified as White shrank considerably compared to other communities, such as those identified as Black, Latino or Hispanic.
White communities currently represent 57.8% of the American population, a decrease of 5.1 million people compared to 2010. In contrast, Hispanic communities have tripled their percentage in the US over the past three decades and now represent 18.7% of the American population.

Immigration was a pillar in the 2020 National Census
It is important to analyze the role of immigration in the 2020 National Census variables. First of all, it is imperative to understand that immigrants are responsible for 42% of the population growth over the last decade.
Adding to that, the National Census reveals that, if the trend continues unabated, within a couple of decades foreign-born populations will outnumber White-identified communities. In fact, a member of the Census Bureau states that the country is “much more multiracial and much more racially and ethnically diverse than what we measured in the past”.
Naturally, there has always been a gigantic social controversy related to mass migration and multicultural inclusion. However, the role of immigration is now almost imperceptible in the American culture because it has been present for many decades and there are entire generations who came from abroad, but who have built their lives in the US and already belong to the nation’s socio-cultural fabric.
The fact that immigration plays such an important role in population growth is something to keep in mind, especially as the Census Bureau explains that by 2030, one in five American citizens will be of retirement age and the country needs to welcome more foreigners to supply the local population’s needs.
