Doctor Involved in Scandal will no Longer Work for ICE
Scandal at Georgia immigrant detention center
Recently, a story that generated a wave of controversy in the US came to light. Broadly speaking, the news refers to a legal complaint filed by a nurse that worked in one of the ICE detention centers, who states that a doctor was performing hysterectomies, also known as sterilizations or uterus extractions, on immigrant women.
What are the duties of ICE?
It is important to clarify that the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is one of the branches of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and one of its current tasks is to supervise immigration detention centers around the country. These centers typically house hundreds of undocumented immigrants.

What is the news specifically about?
According to the testimony of the nurse and at least 8 women involved in the scandal, the Georgia doctor performed sterilizations, without having a specific medical reason, on women who did not have any underlying health problems.
Naturally, this news sparked disagreement among activists and immigrant rights advocates. In fact, in one of our most recent articles, we talk about protests that took place in several cities across the US last weekend due to protocols implemented by ICE amid the global Coronavirus pandemic.
The controversy has been so great that the Office of Inspector General (OIG) is currently conducting a thorough investigation into the case.

Doctor involved in mass sterilizations will no longer work for ICE
On Tuesday, September 22, 2020, an ICE spokesman stated that Dr. Mahendra Amin will no longer be part of the federal agency’s medical team due to accusations of mass sterilizations in immigrant women.
Irwin County Hospital defended the doctor’s procedures and stated that the reputation of the medical center has always been unimpeachable.
However, government officials involved in the case do not want to elaborate, mainly because the OIG investigation is still ongoing.
It is only a matter of time until the OIG publishes its findings and takes appropriate action depending on the results of the investigation.
