Does the Border Situation Look Better for 2022?
The year with the highest number of border encounters
It is quite evident that, since President Biden took office in January 2021, the US has faced a rather alarming surge of illegal border crossings and, as a result, irregular migration levels have increased exponentially.
However, the magnitude of what has been happening at the borders was partially uncertain until CBP (Customs and Border Protection) released the total number of border apprehensions during Fiscal Year (FY) 2021, which ended on September 30.
According to official figures, CBP apprehended a total of 1’659,206 undocumented immigrants in the border territory, a number that includes unaccompanied minors, family units and single adults (including re-entries). This is the highest number of border encounters ever reported in the US history.

The border situation beyond the change of administrations
The natural reaction among the American population is to think that the Biden administration is entirely to blame for the surge of illegal border crossings, and this premise may be correct to some extent, but it is not entirely the case.
It is important to understand the big picture of what influences mass irregular migration. For instance, the surge of illegal border crossings was already taking place at the end of 2020, before Biden took over.
Adding to that, the global Coronavirus pandemic tremendously affected the economy of certain vulnerable territories, forcing hundreds of thousands of people to migrate to the US.

Could the border situation improve in 2022?
Although FY 2021 border apprehension rates were extremely high, the situation could look promising for FY 2022, which began on October 1, 2021. Why do we say this?
Well, let’s look at some important facts:
- Border apprehension rates decreased by 2.8% in August, compared to July, a low but significant figure considering the trend of previous months.
- During the first weeks of September, the daily border encounter rate decreased by 15.09% compared to August.
- Border apprehension rates decreased by 8.5% in September, compared to August, a promising figure for months to come.
Therefore, if the number of border encounters continues with this trend, it is possible that the border situation will gradually improve during FY 2022, which would allow the current administration to finally move towards its immigration plans and optimize the local immigration system.
