DOS and DOE Join Forces to Welcome International Students
DOS and DOE Issue Statement to Attract International Students
On Monday, July 26, 2021, the DOS (Department of State) and DOE (Department of Education) issued a joint statement called “A Renewed U.S. Commitment to International Education”, which proposes a series of measures, strategies, and action plans to attract international students from different parts of the world and help the education sector overcome the downturn in revenue brought on by the global Coronavirus pandemic.
According to DOS and DOE, foreign students contribute greatly, not only through their economic investment, but they are also extremely valuable to the intellectual development of the US. Adding to that, a large number of foreign students are part of important sectors for the country’s international competitiveness such as science, technology, engineering and research, and thanks to their dedication and effort, this North American nation can constantly innovate and continue to be a world power.
In the document, these two entities openly state, “It is imperative that the United States continue to lead the world and remain the destination of choice for talented international students, researchers, scholars, and educators. International students make a critical contribution to a foreign policy that serves the interests of the American people”.

A big step for the education sector
This new effort by the Biden administration to attract talent from abroad is quite encouraging and positive news for colleges and universities that benefit greatly from the presence of foreign students and for the US’ education sector in general.
It is worth mentioning that many internationally recognized educational institutions criticized former President Trump and did not support his second term due to restrictions that his administration implemented on foreign students and the limitations he wanted to impose on visa processes available to these bright individuals.
The vast majority of colleges and universities support the presence of foreigners within their curricula and state that it is imperative to attract talent from abroad in order to restore the economic balance of the education sector. In fact, in June 2021, several educational institutions urged the Biden administration to remove Trump’s rules in order to welcome international students again without the previous administration’s bureaucratic hurdles.
Adding to that, it is important to clarify that the economic investment of foreign students ranges from $40 to $50 billion annually, which undoubtedly keeps the education sector afloat and allows local institutions to offer financial assistance to American students, which is clearly also a win-win.
