DOS Resumes Fiancé(e) and Immigrant Visa Applications
Visa restrictions on grounds of health emergency
The Coronavirus outbreak was extremely massive and spread uncontrollably and rapidly in almost every corner of the world, forcing governments to implement strict measures and adopt unconventional strategies to mitigate the impact of the health crisis and its repercussions on the economy and the global market.
In the case of the US, which has been the main epicenter of the pandemic almost since its inception, then-President Donald Trump implemented multiple restrictions and policies that directly affected the immigration system. This fact caused shock, doubts and uncertainty among activist groups because one of his administration’s goals, since he took office in 2017, was to reduce and limit immigration in the country. As a result, dozens of immigrant rights advocates accused former President Trump of using the pandemic as an excuse to fulfil his anti-immigration agenda.
To give a specific example, former President Trump, in the midst of the first massive outbreak of Coronavirus in the North American territory, suspended the issuance of most visas available to foreigners, except for some programs such as visas related to the US food supply chain.

DOS allows the issuance of fiancé(e) and immigrant visas around the world
Trump’s restrictive policies led to the suspension of almost all visas, including those available to relatives of American citizens or LPRs (Lawful Permanent Residents).
Since the current administration of the US, led by President Joe Biden, has a diametrically opposite stance to Trump when it comes to immigration, it has removed and lifted multiple restrictions from the former president on the local immigration system.
In fact, regarding visa restrictions, Biden’s DOS (Department of State) announced on Thursday, April 8 that, although there are still some restrictions in place on grounds of sanitary emergency, the US’ consulates and embassies around the world are now allowed to receive immigrant and fiancé(e) visa applications.
It is important to clarify that immigrant visas are usually available mainly to foreigners who have a sponsor in the US and can support their visa applications, such as American citizens.
