European Countries Banned from Entering the US
The spread of the Coronavirus
The world is facing a difficult situation with the Coronavirus. Governments around the world are making decisions to prevent the spread of the virus in their territories.
The virus has already been declared a “global pandemic” by the World Health Organization.
Trump’s administration has expressed many opinions regarding how to properly prepare the population for the arrival of the virus and how to treat it in the US.
The figures in the US
The latest reports state that there are nearly 1,700 infected with the coronavirus spread across 48 states in the US.
The current number of deaths is 41 throughout the country.
Idaho and West Virginia are the only states not infected yet.
Government decision
After the virus was defined as a “pandemic”, Trump’s administration announced that entry of people from almost the entire European Union to the US is temporarily suspended.
How does the restriction work?
- The entrance to people who come from the European Union will be prohibited for 30 days.
- The restriction began on Friday, March 13, 2020.
- The only countries that were initially excluded from this rule are the United Kingdom and Ireland. However, now they all are banned from entering the US.
- Admission for legal US citizens (green card holders and native citizens) is allowed.
- People of any nationality (besides US citizens) who have been in Europe 14 days before going to the US are not allowed.
- The restriction will not affect the 1st degree relatives of legal citizens.
Other Actions of the President
- Trump says that the European government did not act fast enough to prevent the spread of the virus.
- According to Trump, the cases in the US have been transmitted mostly by travelers from the European Union.
- The current administration stated that the economy would not be affected by this episode of the Coronavirus. What Trump said on Wednesday, March 11, 2020 was: “This is not a financial crisis, it is only a temporary moment that we will overcome as a nation and as a world.”
- The President of the US offered monetary aid to companies that are affected by the spread of the virus, giving them relief in the event that they must close their daily work for a period of time.
- The cost of the tests, to determine if a person was infected with coronavirus, are extremely expensive in the US (the country with the most expensive public health in the world).
Therefore, President Trump has announced that the necessary medical examinations will be waived for all citizens, however, the price for the whole treatment (in case someone is infected) will not change.
Immigration and the virus
Immigration policies have not changed because of the spread of the virus. The President declares that no action is to be taken at this time regarding illegal immigration. However, there are many immigrant rights advocates who mention the complications that can happen if current immigration laws are not modified at least temporarily.
