Experts Fear Immigrants may not Receive Vaccine in NJ

Experts fear immigrant communities in NJ will not access the vaccine

The impact of the global health emergency

The world was not prepared for the sudden arrival of the global Coronavirus pandemic and its massive spread. The impact of the sanitary emergency affected not only the global health system, but also the economy, social stability and the way we relate to our environment.

Adding to that, the health crisis also skyrocketed the unemployment rate around the world, leaving thousands of families without basic resources to survive. Therefore, governments had to create strategies to mitigate the impact of the pandemic, protect local citizens, safeguard essential resources, boost the economy and generate employment alternatives.

For instance, the US has been the main epicenter of the pandemic for more than nine consecutive months and the local economy suffered an almost devastating decline, the unemployment rate rose disproportionately and the Trump administration had to implement emergency measures such as offering stimulus checks for families affected by the health crisis, close the borders and pause immigration for a considerable period of time.

The COVID-19 vaccine is already being distributed in the US

Finally, after several months of research, health experts created the Coronavirus vaccine, and as of January 14, 2021, approximately 6.2% of the American population had already received the first dose.

However, there are communities that could avoid accessing the vaccination project for multiple reasons. For instance, many immigrant populations, both documented and undocumented, fear receiving the COVID-19 vaccine for fear of deportation or losing their legal immigration status.

This fear arose primarily from policies and rules implemented by the Trump administration over the past four years, which substantially restricted alternatives for the most vulnerable immigrant communities.

The fallout from Trump’s restrictive policies is so alarming that even after the American population elected Joe Biden as the nation’s 46th president, who took office on January 20, hundreds of immigrants still fear seeking medical assistance in the midst of the global health crisis.

Experts fear immigrant communities in NJ will not access the vaccine

In New Jersey (NJ), several immigrant rights advocates and experts fear that the COVID-19 vaccine will not reach immigrant communities, including undocumented foreigners.

They argue that aside from the fear of deportation, the language barrier and lack of access to vaccination information could also prevent thousands of immigrants from accessing the vaccine in this state.

It is important to mention that only the Hispanic population represents 18% of the total population of NJ, but 26% of Coronavirus cases in the state also come from the Hispanic community. Adding to that, experts state that immigrants are typically essential workers and if they don’t get the vaccine, NJ could face great challenges in overcoming the current crisis.
