First Lady of the US Praises Dreamers
First Lady Inspired by Graduate Dreamers
FLOTUS (First Lady of the US) Jill Biden gave a speech on Thursday, May 20 at a ceremony sponsored by TheDream.US, where she praised and congratulated more than 1000 Dreamers who are about to graduate during this academic year.
TheDream.US is an organization that offers scholarships and study grants for young people known as Dreamers, who are immigrants that came to the US without legal documentation when they were minors.
Mrs. Biden, who is a teacher at Northern Virginia Community College, stated that she is inspired by the effort, dedication, and perseverance of graduate Dreamers, who have not only met study goals, but have also had to face exhausting situations and uncertainty since there is still no guarantee for their future in the US.
The First Lady argued that Dreamers are absolutely essential to the country’s economic system and are among the brightest minds in the US. In fact, she openly stated, “We know you have so much to contribute to this nation in the days ahead (…) You already know that the inner strength that got you here will serve you well”.

Biden tries to improve conditions for Dreamers
The First Lady delivered her speech to Dreamers taking into account President Joe Biden’s stance and his intention to improve conditions for young immigrant communities such as Dreamers. In fact, Mrs. Bill stated that “The president is working to build an immigration policy that creates better pathways to citizenship for students like you”.
That has indeed been a goal for the current President of the US, who met a little over a week ago with six Dreamers, who are DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) recipients, to discuss avenues of action to offer them a path to Legal Permanent Residence and eventually American citizenship.
It is important to clarify that DACA is a deportation relief program implemented in 2012 by the administration of then President Barack Obama, which temporarily protects (two years with the possibility of extension) eligible Dreamers.
However, after the Trump administration tried to remove this immigration benefit by all possible means, it is clear that the Biden administration must promote comprehensive immigration reform in order to offer them permanent solutions, taking into account that Dreamers are, in their vast majority, essential workers in all kinds of sectors.
