First Lady to Oversee Immigrant Family Reunification Project
Separation of immigrant families at the borders
In a tireless effort to reduce immigration in the US, the Trump administration implemented multiple policies, sparking a gigantic wave of controversy among the American population due to repercussions they generated.
For instance, Trump’s “Zero Tolerance Policy” caught the attention of activists, immigration attorneys, and immigrant rights advocates since it could cause almost irreversible damage to the growth and development of immigrant minors. Broadly speaking, this policy states that foreigners who cross borders without legal documentation must face criminal prosecution as they are violating local immigration law.
However, minors cannot face legal charges or be detained by border forces for more than 72 hours. Therefore, since many families try to cross the borders of the US to request international protection, thousands of children were separated from their parents under this policy.
Initially, the Trump administration conducted a secret pilot program in 2017 to test the “Zero Tolerance Policy’s” effectiveness. A year later, the Trump administration notified the public and officially implemented this policy, but it was active only until June 2018 due to the controversy it sparked.
During the pilot program, more than 1,000 minors were separated from their relatives and according to the most recent reports, 611 children have not been able to find their parents after more than three years, who may have already been deported under the Trump administration.

Family reunification plan will include input from First Lady
Since the current President of the US, Joe Biden, launched his political campaign, he has emphasized his intention to reunite immigrant families separated at the borders under Trump’s “Zero Tolerance Policy”.
According to three sources close to the project, the First Lady, Jill Biden, will be involved in the planning and strategy to reunite minors with their parents. In fact, earlier this week, the First Lady had a conversation with young Latinos and plans to use her entire team to succeed in her task of reuniting immigrant families.
Adding to that, in December 2020, Jill Biden traveled to shelters across Mexico’s borders, where there are thousands of asylum seekers waiting for answers to their immigration cases in the US, and she stated: “It’s not who we are as Americans. We are a welcoming nation, but that’s not the message that we’re sending at the border.”
