Foreign Students Also Rejoice Over Biden’s Triumph
Immigration and the Presidential elections
The US elections, which took place on November 3, drew the attention of millions of people around the world, mainly because we are going through a global crisis due to the arrival of the Coronavirus pandemic and because the two nominees have a diametrically opposite stance when it comes to immigration, which is an issue of global interest.
Current president, Donald Trump (Republican political party), was seeking re-election and has a fairly strict stance on immigration. However, former Vice President Joe Biden (Democratic political party) took the victory and will be the leader of the US for the next four years. He has a more welcoming stance on immigration.

International students celebrate the results of the presidential elections
Donald Trump’s opinion and vision regarding the immigration sector led him to make decisions and implement strategies that substantially restricted legal processes, although his effort is mainly against illegal immigration.
For instance, speaking specifically about student immigration, the Trump administration proposed multiple policies that:
- Make it difficult for foreigners to obtain a student permit.
- Reduce the possibility for foreign students to choose the US as their destination, which could tremendously affect the economic balance of the local education sector.
- Increase restrictions for foreign students who already reside in the US.
Therefore, international students, both those already residing in the country and those who want to come soon, celebrate the decision of the American population and hope that student visas will be more stable under the administration of Joe Biden, who supports immigration and multicultural inclusion.

The Trump administration’s proposals
The current administration of the US proposed several changes in student immigration, mainly after the arrival of the global COVID-19 pandemic.
Let’s see some of the main proposals:
- In early July, the Trump administration stated that international students must attend a portion of face-to-face classes during the fall or they could face deportation proceedings. His administration revoked this order just 8 days after proposing it due to the reaction of dozens of recognized institutions such as Harvard and legal processes they would have to face.
- In September, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that student visas would have a fixed time period (maximum four years), instead of “Duration of Status”, which allows them to remain in the country until completing their studies.
This rule would apply to 59 countries and generated disagreement among colleges, universities and international students, who claim that almost nobody is able to complete studies in less than four years.
Joe Biden’s triumph could change the course of student immigration, which, in his opinion, is greatly beneficial to local institutions and the economy, as most international students become highly skilled workers, who are necessary to overcome the current crisis.
