Foreign Workers might Have to Leave the US
Thousands of foreign workers may be at risk
President Trump decided to implement new restrictions on immigration in the US due to the devastating economic crisis that the country is currently going through.
The latest official statement from Trump’s administration declares a series of restrictions on work visas issued by the US Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS).
Most USCIS work permits are used by foreign workers who specialize in specific areas of the American market.
Local businesses greatly benefit from the work of qualified foreigners who drive socio-economic development and bring innovative ideas to the US.
Currently, official figures show that around 580,000 foreign workers hold a legal work permit and reside in the country.
Thousands of these workers fear deportation because their work permits are close to expiring and current restrictions could complicate their renewal.

The fear of foreign workers
The Trump administration recently announced two specific measures that went into effect on June 24, 2020 and will be active for the rest of the year.
Those two main restrictions are:
- The suspension of Green Card applications. This is the legal permanent residence that a foreigner can obtain if (s)he meets certain eligibility requirements.
- The suspension of the issuance of work visas. This measure has certain exceptions, for example, foreign workers who are part of the US food supply chain are allowed to enter the country with a work visa.
According to official USCIS figures, approximately 96,800 foreign workers holding the H-1B visa applied for adjustment of status and for legal permanent residence during 2019.
When foreign workers cannot apply to obtain a Green Card for any reason, it is recommended for them to obtain a labor certification to renew their visas and apply for a permanent work permit.
The main fear of foreign workers is that if their work permits are about to expire and they do not have the possibility to apply for a Green Card or to renew their visas, they will have to leave the US of their own free will, otherwise they could face a deportation process.
The immigration agenda
It is well known that since President Trump took office in 2017, he has strived to reduce immigration, both legal and illegal.
Thus, in the opinion of multiple critics around the country, the current administration is trying to meet its immigration agenda amid a global pandemic that threatens public health.
On the other hand, the US presidential elections will take place in November, 2020, and President Trump is seeking reelection with a reform of the country’s immigration policies.
The population must carefully analyze the impact of current immigration policies and what are the achievements of Trump’s government with the restrictions implemented during his term.
