Former President Asks Congress to Lower the Tone on Immigration
Controversy within Congress over immigration
There is currently a growing debate among branches of Congress (the US House of Representatives and the Senate) and dozens of members of different political parties regarding the immigration sector, especially in relation to the current border situation, the change of administrations (from Trump to Biden), immigration bills currently under review, and comprehensive immigration reform.
When we talk about the current border situation, we refer to a surge of illegal border crossings that has drawn the attention of the American public during the last eight weeks, which is also related to a controversy surrounding President Biden’s immigration policies and plans compared to his predecessor’s (former President Donald Trump).
In fact, it is no secret that Trump tried to reduce immigration levels using all possible tools, while President Biden has more welcoming immigration ideals and proposes to restructure the entire immigration system. However, the debate in Congress is undoubtedly delaying his plans and could indeed worsen the current situation.
The reality is that, although controversy can sometimes lead to certain prominent changes, in this case it is causing delays on the immigration system, which affects not only the current administration’s projects, but also the most vulnerable immigrant communities and the local economic system, which finds its competitiveness and strength in diverse workforce.

G. Bush asks Congress to relax criticism and focus on immigration reform
Former President George Bush has recently weighed in on the immigration controversy, advocating for immigrant communities and supporting comprehensive immigration overhaul. In fact, in one of our most recent articles, we talked about a new exposition created by former President Bush, which shows the faces of dozens of immigrants and their experiences and stories in the US.
On Sunday, April 18, 2021, former President Bush commented again on the immigration debate and asked Congress to act instead of increasing the controversy, “put aside all the harsh rhetoric about immigration” and stop delaying comprehensive immigration reform, which is extremely necessary to improve the current border situation and reduce the number of illegal crossings.
It is worth mentioning that Bush was the 43rd president of the US, he held this position from 2001 to 2009 and his administration created entities that are now essential, and also controversial, to the immigration system such as the DHS (Department of Homeland Security), ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement), CBP (Customs and Border Protection) and USCIS (US Citizenship and Immigration Services).
