Former Presidential Candidate Supports DACA Recipients
The future of thousands of young immigrants
During Barack Obama’s presidency, multiple immigration programs came into force and many of them aimed to offer protection and assistance to the most vulnerable communities.
That is the case of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), which is an immigration benefit that offers protection against deportation for two years, with the possibility of extension. This program is available to immigrants who came to the US without legal documentation when they were minors (“Dreamers”).
To apply for this program, immigrants must have arrived in the country when they were under 16 years old and must have been under 31 years old on June 15, 2012, when it was implemented for the first time. Currently, DACA protects more than 600,000 young immigrants, who now have the possibility to obtain a legal work permit and many other benefits.

The legal battle between DACA recipients and the Trump administration
The Trump administration states that immigrants, regardless of whether they are minors or adults, who decide to cross the borders of the US without legal documentation are violating local law and should not have opportunities to obtain residence permits under any circumstances.
In President Trump’s view, if the government offers alternatives for undocumented immigrants to obtain legal permits, that would only incentivize and increase illegal immigration, which can tremendously affect the country. That is why his government intends to “teach a lesson” to undocumented immigrants through deportation without the possibility of appeal.
In the case of DACA, since it protects undocumented people, the Trump administration has tried to remove it from programs offered to immigrants currently residing in the US.
Despite the fact that the Supreme Court of Justice ruled in favor of DACA in June 2020, the current administration is not receiving new applications and is renewing these permits only for one year, instead of two.
Thus, because the Trump administration disobeyed the Supreme Court order, the last hope and alternative for DACA recipients was the US presidential election.
Former presidential candidate launches T-Shirt project to support DACA recipients
Democratic nominee Joe Biden won the election and will serve as the 46th president of the US. It is important to clarify that he was not the only Democratic candidate, Julian Castro also ran for president.
However, in January 2020, Castro withdrew his candidacy for the presidential election, stating that it was not the right time for his campaign.
After the election results, Castro announced that his slogan “Goodbye Trump!” (Adiós Trump!) will be used to benefit thousands of Dreamers who were affected by policies of the Trump administration.
Former presidential candidate and former US Secretary of Housing and Urban Development launched a T-Shirt project, which will have his motto, and funds will help DACA recipients, who need to renew their permits to remain in the country.
