FY 2021: Highest Number of Naturalization Ceremonies in Years
Number of Naturalization Ceremonies increased during the last year
According to official figures, the USCIS (US Citizenship and Immigration Services) sponsored the highest number of Naturalization Ceremonies in more than a decade during Fiscal Year (FY) 2021.
Approximately 808,000 LPRs (Lawful Permanent Residents) became American citizens in FY 2021, which ended on September 30.
This is quite a high number compared to previous years, when the figure was relatively low, even more so in the midst of the health crisis caused by the global Coronavirus pandemic.
To give a specific example, in FY 2020, approximately 625,400 LPRs became American citizens.

What are Naturalization Ceremonies?
Naturalization Ceremonies are the last step immigrants must take to officially become American citizens.
Since the path to citizenship is the dream of hundreds of thousands of immigrants, over the past few years there has been a fairly high backlog of citizenship applications.

Naturalization Ceremonies rebound after the pandemic
the USCIS expedited the naturalization process after its offices were closed for a considerable period of time in light of the global health emergency.
Adding to that, under Trump’s term, most existing immigration processes, including naturalization, slowed down due to a number of restrictions and limitations implemented by his administration.

The Biden administration’s effort
It is important to mention that, not only has the USCIS put effort into expediting the naturalization process, but it has been part of an extensive strategy of the Biden administration.
When Biden took office in early 2021, his administration emphasized the need to streamline existing immigration processes and promote a path to citizenship for eligible LPRs, who have long been a part of American culture and have also become a pillar for the national economy.
In fact, in July 2021, the Biden administration unveiled a national naturalization plan to incentivize LPRs to become American citizens as soon as possible.
Clearly, this project has also contributed to an increase in the number of naturalization applications and for current USCIS leaders to streamline this process.
