Guatemala Asks the US to Halt Deportations
Natural disasters in Central America
In November 2020, during the Atlantic Hurricane Season, the Central American territory was hit by two hurricanes, which fall into the strongest categories (4-5). These natural disasters affected vulnerable territories, increasing famine among Central American citizens and worsening the local economic system.
Adding to that, the global Coronavirus pandemic also decreased the quality of life of the Central American population because:
- The local health system is not strong enough to withstand a massive Coronavirus outbreak.
- The health crisis also caused an economic crisis.
- Most Central American countries do not have enough resources to help the local population during times of crisis.
- There are not enough supplies to protect health workers and local citizens.
Speaking specifically about Guatemala, one of the countries most affected by the global pandemic and hurricanes, it is asking neighboring governments for help to overcome the current crisis.
Guatemala asks the US government to suspend deportations
The arrival of the health crisis forced governments to adopt emergency measures to protect local resources, the economic and health system, the local population and prevent the massive spread of COVID-19 in their territories. The US was no exception.
President Trump, along with his cabinet, implemented multiple strategies to mitigate the impact of the pandemic. Many of these emergency measures directly affected the immigration sector.
For instance, to prevent immigrants from entering the US, the Trump administration closed the borders and allowed express deportations during the health emergency. This allow border forces to expel undocumented immigrants in a matter of hours, after detaining them at the borders.
Normally, they are taken to immigration detention centers, where they must wait their deportation proceedings or, if eligible, the response to their immigration application or appeal.
Adding to that, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) increased operations to locate, detain, and deport undocumented immigrants across the US, which has substantially increased deportations to Central American territory.
Therefore, due to Guatemala’s current circumstances, President Alejandro Giammattei is asking the US government to suspend Guatemalans deportations, at least until the country finds means to regain economic balance and help the local population.
The Trump administration has yet to respond to this request and the course of deportations continues at its normal pace today.
