Guatemala Receives 127 Deportees from the US
The agreements between the US and Guatemala
In July 2019, the governments of the US and Guatemala signed the Asylum Cooperation Agreement (ACA), which declares that the US has the right to deport asylum seekers to Guatemala, even if they are not legal citizens of this Central American nation.
Thus, the US border forces have been rapidly deporting immigrants, who wish to seek political asylum to flee from persecution, violence, or danger of their countries, to Guatemala.
However, the situation worsened with the arrival of the global Coronavirus pandemic, mainly because the Trump administration is allowed to use express deportations during the health crisis.
It means that immigrants who are currently detained trying to cross borders without legal documentation are deported almost immediately, sometimes in a matter of hours.
This generated great concern for the Guatemalan government because official figures showed that 25% of Coronavirus cases in its territory came from deportation flights from the US.
Therefore, the Guatemalan government temporarily suspended deportations from the US and established a series of requirements that American border forces must meet before sending deportation flights. For instance, all deported immigrants must have a medical certificate that rectifies that they are not infected with the Coronavirus.

Guatemala receives deportees who overcame the COVID-19
On Wednesday, August 19, 2020, the Guatemalan Migration Institute confirmed that the US deported 127 immigrants to the Central American nation.
This deportation case is peculiar because all the immigrants had tested positive for the Coronavirus, but they were able to overcome it.
The US border forces sent the certificates of each of the deportees, ensuring that they are no longer carriers of the COVID-19, nor do they have symptoms related to the virus.
The deported immigrants received medical treatment while residing in the US and were able to recover successfully.
As a mandatory preventive measure, the Guatemalan government ordered mandatory isolation for the deportees as soon as they arrived. With this, it is intended to prevent further spread of the virus in its territory.
