Harris Discusses Strategies to Reduce Mass Migration
Vice President Harris moves forward with the task of improving the situation at the borders
It is well known that the current border situation has caught the attention of the American population and has made national news for at least eight weeks. By this, we refer to the growing number of apprehensions at the borders reported by entities such as CBP (Customs and Border Protection).
The reason why the surge of illegal border crossings became extremely controversial, even though it had already happened in other times, is because the numbers increased exponentially after President Biden took office in late January 2021 and because the health risk caused by the global Coronavirus pandemic is still present.
Amid constant criticism, the Biden administration is trying to control the current border situation by all means possible to curb mass irregular migration and be able to move forward with its immigration bill and comprehensive immigration overhaul.
To improve the situation at the borders, President Biden appointed Vice President Kamala Harris as the person in charge of creating international strategies and alliances to address the root causes of mass irregular migration from Central America.
Since then, Vice President Harris has not traveled to the borders, but she has discussed the situation with the President of Mexico and the President of Guatemala. These two leaders agree that mass migration takes place when conditions are not the best for Central American citizens, forcing them to seek alternatives in North America.

Harris states immigrants need to feel that the future will get better
As part of the strategy to effectively address the border situation, Vice President Harris convened a meeting of leaders on Thursday, April 22, where they discussed the surge of illegal border crossings, but mainly the reasons why thousands of Central Americans decide to start the dangerous journey to come to the US without legal documentation.
Harris states that, regardless of local policies or the country’s administration, there are conditions inherent in the Central American territory that force people to migrate in search of safety and opportunities. With this, the Vice President refers to precarious situations such as famine, war, corruption and violence.
Thus, Vice President Harris states that, rather than creating plans to implement strict and arbitrary border policies, “the question has to be, ‘Why do people leave home?’ And often it is the case that people leave home when they don’t want to either because they are fleeing sometimes, or because they are unable to satisfy their basic needs and the needs of taking care of their family. Because the resources and opportunities are not there.”
As one of the main conclusions, Vice President Harris argued during the meeting that Central American citizens should feel that, if they stay in their countries of origin, conditions will improve and there will be better opportunities for themselves and their beloved ones, a sense of security.
