Federal judge strikes down deportation relief program

Unlike other governments, the Trump administration never agreed to offer legal alternatives to immigrants residing in the US undocumented, that is, people who crossed the country’s borders without following regular protocols or who overstayed their legal residence permit.

Therefore, during Trump’s term (2017-2021), undocumented immigrants had almost no alternative to remain in the US or apply for legal documentation. Adding to that and as expected, the Trump administration also tried to narrow or even eradicate certain deportation relief programs that protect undocumented foreigners. That is the case of DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals).

This is a benefit that protects young immigrants known as Dreamers from deportation for two years with the possibility of extension. Thousands of Dreamers have been able to work and study legally since 2012 thanks to this immigration program.

In one of the legal battles against DACA, which began under the Trump administration, a Texas judge was to determine whether this program meets the mandatory requirements to be a legitimate immigration benefit. Recently, the federal judge ruled against DACA and barred approval of new applications.

Harris assures the Biden administration will act on DACA ruling
