Highest Number of Immigrants at the US Border in 20 Years
Thousands of migrants apprehended at the US borders
President Joe Biden’s administration is going through a gigantic wave of controversy due to the skyrocketing rise in irregular immigration since he took office in late January 2021.
In fact, CBP (Customs and Border Protection), which is one of the federal entities in charge of preventing any kind of illegal activity at the borders such as irregular immigration, has apprehended a growing number of undocumented immigrants, who, in their vast majority, plan to apply for political asylum in the US and flee from precarious situations.
The current problem lies in the fact that thousands of migrants detained at the borders are unaccompanied minors and, since the Biden administration wants to prevent the deportation of immigrant children at all costs, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) centers have already reached their maximum capacity and border forces are keeping minors in their facilities for more than 72 hours, which goes against local law and sparks a gigantic social controversy.
Naturally, opposition groups seize the opportunity to enact their anti-immigration message and blame the Biden administration for the surge of illegal immigration, although there are undoubtedly other factors that are forcing thousands of people to migrate to the US such as natural disasters, the global economic crisis, lack of employment opportunities, lack of financial stability, violence and war.

The highest number of immigrants apprehended at the borders in 20 years
Major federal entities have intervened in the current border situation to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe, to help the Biden administration to control irregular immigration and pave the way for it to continue with its immigration plans.
For instance, Alejandro Mayorkas, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary, has tried to protect the borders and explain the current situation to the American public. In fact, on March 16, 2021, through an official statement, Mayorkas stated that border forces are apprehending the highest number of undocumented immigrants in the last 20 years and that is happening for multiple reasons, not just because of Biden’s immigration policies.
Mayorkas declares that most migrants are being returned to Central American territory, except unaccompanied minors, because the health crisis is still present. He also states that it is important to enforce immigration law at the borders and reduce irregular immigration.
In fact, Mayorkas openly states, “The situation we are currently facing at the southwest border is a difficult one. We are tackling it. We are keeping our borders secure, enforcing our laws, and staying true to our values and principles.”
