Hunger Strikes at Immigrant Detention Centers
Immigration enforcement under the Trump administration
One of the main goals of the Trump administration is to reduce immigration. Therefore, President Trump’s team has used border entities as a key piece to fulfill its immigration purposes, curb illegal immigration, detain and deport undocumented foreigners, and substantially restrict immigration processes.
For instance, ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement), which is a branch of DHS (Department of Homeland Security), has been essential during Trump’s term, who hired more than 10,000 ICE employees and used this entity to conduct massive operations within the US to detain and deport undocumented immigrants, mainly those who managed to cross the borders without prior authorization and could pose a threat to the local population due to criminal records or pending legal charges.
Immigration enforcement within the US has increased considerably under the presidency of Donald Trump, who, by building a large part of the border wall that separates the US from Mexico, moved ICE agents to the interior of the country to reduce legal alternatives for undocumented immigrants.

Massive outbreak of Coronavirus and immigrant detention centers
When border entities like ICE conduct detention operations, they usually take detainees to immigrant detention centers across the US, where they must wait until their deportation processes are completed or, if they meet the necessary requirements, until they receive a response to their immigration requests or appeals.
Adding to that, there are also hundreds of asylum seekers detained in these facilities, who were intercepted by ICE or CBP (Customs and Border Protection) while trying to cross the borders of the US without legal documentation to request international protection within the country.
The situation in immigrant detention centers has been extremely dangerous during the massive outbreak of Coronavirus in the North American territory, mainly because these facilities are normally overcrowded and there is not enough space to have social distancing recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO).
As a result, hundreds of detained immigrants, immigrant rights advocates, activists and immigration attorneys have raised their voices through protests, strikes and legal complaints, asking the Trump administration to release immigrants during the health crisis, at least those that do not pose a threat to the American population.

Detained immigrants go on hunger strikes to be released
Amid despair, anguish and fear, dozens of detained immigrants went on hunger strikes at several immigration detention centers in New York and New Jersey. They state that the massive outbreak of Coronavirus is still present in these facilities and ICE officials do not always follow protection or hygiene protocols, increasing the sanitary risk.
They, along with activists involved in the case, assure that ICE has the necessary resources to monitor them remotely, at least during the health crisis, and prevent another massive outbreak within its facilities. In addition to that, the Trump administration’s investment to use facilities of private prison companies is quite high, and releasing detainees would allow the federal government to invest in other areas to improve the current situation of the country.
