IACHR Intervenes on Allegations of Hysterectomies in ICE Detention Center
The US border forces
The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is the federal agency in charge of overseeing immigration detention centers around the US. These centers normally house undocumented immigrants facing deportation proceedings.
This federal agency has the task of detaining immigrants who cross the borders of the US without prior authorization, both people who are trying to cross them, as well as those who managed to cross them and currently reside within the country.

News about hysterectomies in immigrant women
Due to the nature of its duties, ICE is constantly involved in a gigantic controversy, mainly because there is a part of the population that believes that its methods are arbitrary and supports the idea of offering legal residency options to undocumented immigrants.
For instance, in one of our most recent articles, we talk about a nurse reporting that a member of the ICE medical team was performing sterilizations or uterus removals (hysterectomies) on immigrant women who did not need this type of procedure.
It is important to clarify that the Trump administration constantly intends to reduce illegal immigration by “teaching a lesson” to foreigners who decide to cross borders without documentation and that is the main reason why this news unleashed a wave of controversy among the American population.
Dozens of activists claim that border forces such as ICE are violating international human rights by following guidelines and ideals of the Trump government.

The IACHR comments on mass sterilizations
The news of mass sterilizations in immigrant women went viral in a matter of hours, prompting dozens of nonprofit organizations, government officials, religious groups, immigration attorneys, and immigrant rights advocates to raise their voice, calling for retaliation against people involved in these events, labeled on many occasions as “alarming and worrying.”
In fact, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) recently commented on the news and stated: “The IACHR recalls that the State has an obligation to guarantee the life and integrity of the people under its jurisdiction and to obtain prior, free and full consent before carrying out any medical intervention, including surgical sterilization.”
It is important to clarify that the IACHR is part of the Organization of American States (OAS) and its main purpose is to ensure the protection of human rights in the American continent.
Currently, the Office of Inspector General (OIG) is conducting a thorough investigation in order to implement necessary measures as soon as possible.
