ICE and CBP Plan to Detain more Immigrants Despite new COVID-19 Outbreak
Border forces during the term of Donald Trump
One of the main purposes of the current administration of the US, with President Donald Trump leading, has always been to reduce the number of immigrants entering the country. With this, we refer not only to illegal immigration, but also to restrictions implemented to decrease legal immigration.
Therefore, one of the most important tools to meet this goal are border forces such as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP). In fact, the Trump administration has used these federal entities to increase:
- Deportation proceedings for undocumented immigrants.
- Undocumented immigrant detention operations across the US.
- Extensive investigations to locate undocumented immigrants, who managed to cross borders without prior authorization.
- Personnel at the borders to prevent illegal immigration.
Certainly, due to the nature of their work, border agencies are constantly involved in controversies, mainly because activist groups and immigrant rights advocates assure that the Trump administration is using these entities improperly to violate human rights and deport innocent people amid an unprecedented sanitary emergency, including unaccompanied minors.

Trump loses election and border forces increase immigration detention
The US presidential elections took place on November 3, 2020. President Trump, who belongs to the Republican political party, was seeking re-election. However, Democratic nominee Joe Biden, who was vice president during Obama’s term, took the victory and will be the country’s 46th president as of January 2021.
However, the Trump administration continues with the intention of detaining undocumented immigrants before leaving office. In fact, a top CBP official stated last week that the agency had an action plan to conduct operations to detain undocumented immigrants and take them to the Mesa Verde detention center in Bakersfield.
Although the number of people infected with COVID-19 continues to rise in the US due to a second massive outbreak, border forces, with the approval and support of the Trump administration, intend to repopulate this immigrant detention center.
Border entities ensure that new protection and health protocols will be implemented to prevent another massive outbreak of Coronavirus in these facilities.
For instance, the border forces plan to:
- Test all incoming detainees for COVID-19.
- Immigrants will have to be in mandatory isolation for the first two weeks after arriving at the detention center.
- If detainees test positive for COVID-19, they must be in isolation for at least two weeks.
- If immigrants refuse the COVID-19 test, they will also be in isolation as a prevention method.
However, what immigrant rights advocates claim is that since this virus is highly contagious through human contact, another wave of positive cases will almost inevitably emerge in immigration detention centers, which are usually overcrowded.
