ICE Detains Hundreds of Immigrants in Sanctuary Jurisdictions
ICE targets sanctuary cities
The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency, which is one of the main branches of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), has multiple tasks aimed at protecting the borders, the American population and prevent illegal immigration in the US.
Due to the stance of President Donald Trump when it comes to immigration, mainly illegal, ICE has been a key piece to fulfill the purposes, ideals and goals of his administration, which propose to reduce immigration to protect sovereignty, employment and the safety of local citizens.
In fact, currently, one of the main tasks of ICE is to carry out exhaustive investigations to locate immigrants, who managed to cross the borders without legal documentation, and then conduct massive operations across the US to arrest them and initiate deportation proceedings for them.
Just before the presidential elections (November 2020), ICE is conducting operations in the so-called “sanctuary cities or jurisdictions”. These cities have local laws that ban law enforcement entities from cooperating with border forces such as ICE to detain undocumented immigrants.

Official ICE figures in sanctuary cities
Between October 3 and 9, 2020, ICE conducted immigration detention operations in cities with sanctuary laws and, according to official figures, border agents arrested more than 170 undocumented immigrants.
Cities involved in the operations are:
- Seattle.
- Denver.
- Philadelphia.
- Baltimore.
- New York.
- Washington D.C.
It is important to clarify that these operations are aimed at detaining undocumented immigrants who have participated in crimes, have legal charges, are fugitives from the law, have pending deportation proceedings or could pose a threat to the American population.
ICE claims that foreigners detained during its raids were previously arrested by state entities, which released them without cooperating with border forces due to sanctuary policies.
Normally, ICE tries to create agreements with law enforcement agencies of each state to be able to detain undocumented immigrants inside prisons and correctional facilities, instead of conducting operations in the streets, which could jeopardize public order. However, this is not allowed in sanctuary jurisdictions.
Senior official performing as Director, Tony H. Pham, who is also a refugee from Vietnam, states: “ICE continues to protect communities by taking criminal aliens off the streets regardless of any locality’s cooperation policies – which is part of our Congressionally mandated mission.”

Protect your future and choose the right path
Illegal immigration may seem simpler and easier, however, the reality is that it is extremely risky and dangerous to cross the borders of the US without legal documentation. Adding to that, due to the policies put in place by the Trump administration, undocumented immigrants are currently facing expedited deportation proceedings.
It is exhausting to be constantly worried about ICE operations or deportation. Therefore, choosing legal paths represents the security you need to come to the US, gain work experience, and build the future you want for your beloved ones.
