ICE Postpones Controversial “Citizen Academy”
ICE’s famous “Citizen Academy”
The Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) is the entity in charge of protecting the borders, supervising merchandise entering the US, overseeing immigration detention centers, detaining undocumented foreigners around the country, and other multiple tasks.
During the last few years, this agency has grown exponentially with the help of the Trump administration, which ordered the hiring of 10,000 ICE employees to increase the arrests of undocumented immigrants who managed to cross the borders illegally and who currently reside in the country, and to reduce illegal immigration from Central America.
ICE has the right and power to carry out operations focused on the capture of undocumented foreigners, as well as to create strategies to mitigate the impact of illegal immigration.
In fact, in one of our most recent articles, we talk about a proposal that ICE released in late July 2020, which states that American citizens could attend the “Citizen Academy” starting in September.
Broadly speaking, this academy plans to educate citizens about the methods implemented by ICE when detaining undocumented immigrants.
On top of that, ICE wants to train American citizens in:
- Self defense techniques.
- Proper handling of firearms.
- ICE procedures and protocols.
- Methods to arrest undocumented foreigners.

This academy unleashed social chaos
Naturally, as soon as ICE released this news, it sparked alarming social controversy among immigrant rights advocates and critics, who argue that this proposal will only increase violence, discrimination and division between the immigrant communities that currently reside in the US and American citizens who do not support immigration.
That would, in their opinion, give them the opportunity and the power to threaten the integrity of innocent people who might have an active immigration case and are just waiting for the opportunity to legally reside in the country.

ICE postpones the “Citizen Academy”
On Thursday, September 3, 2020, ICE announced that the “Citizens Academy” is postponed until spring 2021 due to the threat to public health generated by the global Coronavirus pandemic.
In fact, one of the ICE officers stated: “In light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) in Chicago has postponed ERO’s citizens academy until the spring 2021. An exact date is still being determined. Those who completed the applications to participate will be contacted during the spring.”
This news clearly cheered hundreds of activists, who participated in protests against the ICE academy.
They claim that ICE canceled this project precisely because of the pressure that activists put on the federal agency around the country.
