ICE to be Investigated for its Response to COVID-19
DHS will investigate ICE
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) decided to review the hygiene protocols implemented by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during the global pandemic.
After receiving multiple allegations of mismanagement during the health emergency, DHS will investigate ICE to prevent a possible spread of the virus inside immigration detention centers across the country.
The DHS Inspector General is in charge of conducting this investigation during the Coronavirus health crisis.
The reason why DHS decided to do this investigation is due to alarming complaints regarding the health protocols implemented by ICE.
For instance, a group of 26 senators made an official request to DHS, warning about the imminent risk present in immigration detention centers and the negligence of ICE during the pandemic.
Some of the complaints received are:
- ICE employees do not have enough personal protective equipment.
- Detained immigrants do not have access to adequate hygiene.
- There is not enough social distancing to prevent mass spread inside immigrant detention centers.
The official report states: “There is a long history of disease outbreaks in detention facilities and this is the first step toward ensuring that sufficient policies and practices are in place to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in ICE detention.”
In addition to that, DHS decided to conduct this investigation due to alarming numbers of infected people inside immigration detention centers around the country.
Just in a Texas detention center there are more than 110 detainees who tested positive in the Coronavirus exam and official figures show that there are more than 600 people infected at ICE facilities around the country.
It is important to clarify that this figure does not include ICE employees who have tested positive in the Coronavirus exam as well.
They have faithfully served the border forces for years and, according to the senators’ opinion, the minimum they deserve is guaranteed health protection.
ICE employees also have families and must protect them from possible contagion.
ICE’s response to this investigation
Several ICE leaders ensure that these facilities have enough protection to mitigate the impact of the virus.
They claim that immigration detention centers have received supplies of protective masks, gloves, and disposable gowns during the past few weeks.
However, despite this response from ICE, the investigation continues its normal course.
