Illegal Immigration Increased Considerably During July
Current restrictions in the immigration sector
The current administration of the US has always been characterized by its vision towards immigration and its action plans focused on reducing illegal immigration and controlling the issuance of all types of visas.
The sudden arrival of the Coronavirus pandemic benefited the Trump administration because it was able to implement emergency measures that greatly restrict immigration in the country.
For instance, some of the immigration processes paused by the massive outbreak of Coronavirus are:
- Applications for political asylum.
- Green card applications.
- Face-to-face services of the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Therefore, immigration processes are currently behind schedule.
- Work visa applications for qualified foreign workers.
- Tourist visas.
Hence, due to recently implemented restrictions, immigration has been substantially reduced in the US.
Nowadays, most of the processes available to foreigners are gradually returning to normal and the USCIS has face-to-face services available to the public. In addition to that, consulates and embassies are resuming their services around the world to apply for entry and legal residence permits.

Activists’ warnings
Despite the apparent intention of the Trump administration to protect the health of the population, American workers and the local economy, since the president began to implement restrictions and increase requirements for immigration processes, dozens of activists have warned about the possible repercussions of these abrupt changes.
They stated that restricting immigration in this way would only unleash a massive wave of illegal immigration, which is the opposite result of what the government wants.
Several activist communities stated that immigrants would desperately try to cross the borders of the US because:
- Waiting times would be considerably longer for legal processes.
- The countries of South and Central America would enter the peak of Coronavirus infections and the economic system would not support the massive outbreak, therefore, unemployment would skyrocket and force thousands of people to migrate illegally to the US.
Thus, activists had already warned about the predictable increase in illegal immigration.

This hypothesis comes true
The New York Times shows, in a recent article, the official figures released by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and it states that illegal immigration increased dramatically during July 2020, after a reduction during March, April and May.
Official figures show that:
- The number of immigrants detained at the southern borders of the country during April was 16,162. While, in July, this figure increased 137%, with a total of 38,347 people arrested.
- The impact of these figures on Trump’s plans could affect his political campaign for the presidential elections that will take place in November 2020.
- Due to the health crisis, border forces are allowed to carry out express deportations, so that a large number of detained immigrants are returned to their countries almost immediately. However, when the situation in the US returns to normal, even partially, the deportation processes must also return to normal and this could affect the country’s immigration system and immigration detention centers.
- Border forces have reported that many detained immigrants had already been deported (even multiple times) during the current juncture. Therefore, they will most likely keep trying until they enter the US or until they have a chance to at least present their immigration cases.
Thus, official reports from border forces clearly show that strict immigration restrictions could produce the opposite result than expected.
It is important for the Trump administration to carefully analyze the possible repercussions of banning immigration during the health crisis, because it could spark a massive wave of illegal immigration, which could greatly affect the country’s economic system.
