Immigrant Rights Advocates Comment on ICE Raids on “Sanctuary Cities”
ICE operatives
The Trump administration has used every tool at its disposal to impact illegal immigration. One of the key players of the current administration of the US is the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), one of the branches of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which is responsible for protecting borders and preventing illegal immigration.
ICE periodically carries out operations with the purpose of detaining immigrants who managed to cross the borders and currently reside in the US without legal documentation. During the term of President Donald Trump, ICE operations have increased and intensified, detaining thousands of immigrants and initiating deportation proceedings for them.
Typically, ICE tries to create agreements with local governments, as well as with prisons and correctional facilities, so that they can help the border entity to detain undocumented immigrants.
However, there are states and cities that have chosen to implement the so-called “sanctuary laws”, which prevent local entities from cooperating with federal entities such as ICE.

ICE threatens “Sanctuary Cities”
In one of our most recent articles, we talk about how ICE threatened cities that protect undocumented immigrants by avoiding cooperation with the federal entity. The border agency announced that operations in these cities will take place from October 2020.
Dozens of activists state that it is quite questionable that the Trump administration makes these operations public only four weeks before the presidential elections, which will take place in November 2020.
The current administration of the US declares that cities that do not cooperate with border forces support crime and violence. In addition to that, ICE officials argue that the safety of American citizens is at risk in “sanctuary cities”, primarily because they have to carry out operations on the streets, rather than in jails and correctional facilities.
It is important to clarify that the latest ICE operations have been focused on detaining undocumented immigrants who have been part of any kind of crime.

Immigrant Rights Advocates Comment on Raids in “Sanctuary Cities”
Dozens of activist organizations and even several spokespersons for California governor (one of the states that supports sanctuary laws) declare that ICE’s threat is cruel and intended to instill fear among immigrant communities.
They recommend for immigrants to know their rights to avoid deportation proceedings. In fact, a spokesman for Governor Newsom stated: “These tactics are not new, but they are unabashedly cruel in their effort to instill fear in Californians who are disproportionately struggling through a pandemic, wildfires, loss of family and friends to COVID-19, as well as economic losses (…) All Californians must know they have legal rights and protections, regardless of their immigration status.”
