Immigrants Contribute to the US Recognition in Scientific Fields
Immigrants are a vital part of the US’ development
The US business immigration system normally offers a wide range of options available to local companies and highly skilled foreign workers. They gain work experience through important sectors such as science, technology, research, and health care.
A recent study conducted by the National Foundation for American Policy (NFAP) reveals that a considerable percentage of Nobel Prize winners are immigrants, bringing “honor and recognition to America in scientific fields”, according to Forbes.
It is important to clarify that this is an international award that recognizes outstanding work in physics, medicine, chemistry, economics, literature and the promotion of peace.
The study shows that between 2000 and 2020, 37% (37/100) of the Nobel Prize winners in the US have been highly qualified immigrants, who received work permits through visas issued by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
Just in 2020, one in five Nobel Prize winners in the US is an immigrant. These 2020 awards involved important sectors of science such as medicine, physics and chemistry.

The conclusion of the study
Broadly speaking, the NFAP states that more welcoming immigration policies will allow the US to continue to be a world power in the fields of science, while if the government continues to restrict business immigration, it could impact local socioeconomic development in the long term.
The study concludes that “Being open to immigration will allow America to reap the most benefits of scientific and technological innovation. When one asks successful entrepreneurs and scientists conducting groundbreaking research whether they favor liberalized policies on immigration, the answer they invariably give is that more immigration and greater openness to international students, researchers and immigrants across the skill spectrum will help America to grow and prosper.”

The position of the current administration of the US
This is not the first time a study reveals positive aspects of immigration. In fact, multiple organizations and experts have conducted research that lead to the same conclusion: business immigration is necessary for the country to sustain its international competitiveness.
However, despite the results of these studies, the Trump administration disagrees with the massive influx of foreign workers, arguing that American citizens are unemployed due to foreign workforce and its low price, which affects the local population.
