Biden has already reversed multiple immigration restrictions

The current administration of the US, led by Democratic President Joe Biden, has always been quite clear about its ideal of restructuring the entire immigration system through comprehensive reform.

Thus, since Biden took office in late January 2021, his administration has initially removed multiple restrictions implemented by the Trump administration to be able to pave the way and promote the first comprehensive immigration overhaul in decades.

So far, President Biden has issued three times more executive orders than his predecessor Donald Trump during his first 100 days in office, which are related to the immigration sector and undoubtedly open a door of hope for the most vulnerable immigrant communities after an administration that tried to narrow and limit all kinds of alternatives available to foreigners.

To give a specific example, President Biden recently announced that the US will admit more refugees during the remainder of fiscal year 2021 (October-September). In the official statement, Biden increased the refugee cap from 15,000 (the limit implemented by Trump before leaving office) to 62,500.

Although the number of refugees entering the US in the coming months may not reach the new limit due to delays in immigration processes and a large backlog of immigration cases in the country, this decision by the Biden administration will definitely change the government’s approach to the immigration sector for the next four years.

Immigrant communities expect more changes to the immigration system

Immigrant communities are currently asking the Biden administration to remove more restrictive policies implemented by former President Trump in order to streamline their immigration processes and enter the US as soon as possible or complete their processes within the country.

This is because, on the one hand, the current administration has indeed removed several limitations from the Trump administration, but, on the other hand, it still maintains certain border restrictions, especially those related to the health crisis caused by the global Coronavirus pandemic.

Therefore, immigrant communities are calling on the Biden administration to transform the entire immigration system and make more changes to existing processes, in addition to increasing the annual refugee limit, to benefit foreign workers and the most vulnerable immigrants who are currently waiting in Mexico for the opportunity to request international protection in the US.

However, the Biden administration has also been quite clear regarding the lack of resources to house large numbers of refugees or asylum seekers in certain border regions. Instead, it is first trying to balance local resources to gradually improve the immigration system, without affecting the American  population.
