Immigration Advocates Expect Radical Changes with Biden
Immigration advocates and attorneys are hopeful with the incoming government
The most recent presidential elections of the US were mainly focused on the health crisis caused by the global Coronavirus pandemic, the health system, the unemployment rate and national economic stability.
However, there were also other relevant issues that American citizens took into account to choose the next president of the nation, such as immigration. The immigration system has changed dramatically with President Donald Trump leading the nation, who used every tool at his disposal to reduce the number of foreigners entering the US.
Despite President Trump seeking a second term, the local population elected Joe Biden, belonging to the Democratic political party, as the 46th President of the US, who will take office on January 20, 2021.
Dozens of immigration attorneys, immigrant rights advocates and activists have raised their voices for the most vulnerable immigrant communities, which have been tremendously affected by policies of the Trump administration. They celebrate Joe Biden’s victory and hope his administration will improve the immigration system and deliver on its promises regarding foreign workers, asylum seekers, DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) recipients, TPS (Temporary Protected Status) beneficiaries, inter alia.

The Trump administration and immigration
The Trump administration’s stance when it comes to immigration has always been quite strict and restrictive. President Trump argues that mass immigration is extremely detrimental to the economic system and American workers.
That is why, for the past four years, his government has tried to curb immigration at all costs. With this, we refer to processes from family immigration, humanitarian programs such as political asylum and refuge, to business immigration processes and visa programs for highly qualified foreign workers.
Adding to that, President Trump consistently links immigration to crime, which has increased social discrimination and division between local citizens and immigrant communities currently residing in the US.

The Biden government and immigration
Biden’s stance on immigration is diametrically opposed to Trump’s. Rather than reducing immigration, the president-elect plans to increase benefits and legal alternatives for immigrants, both undocumented and documented, as a strategy to reduce illegal immigration and attract talent from abroad.
The Biden-Harris administration sees immigration as something positive, as a strength, and a benefit to the US economy. In fact, the president-elect has mentioned on several occasions that multiculturalism, international competitiveness, and technological and scientific development heavily relies on immigrant communities that came to the US decades ago.
Therefore, since the Biden administration’s stance is quite welcoming when it comes to immigration, activist groups and immigrant rights advocates hope that it will reform, restructure, and improve the immigration system to protect the most vulnerable immigrant communities like asylum seekers and offer more alternatives for foreign workers, who are extremely necessary for the country to overcome the current crisis.
