Immigration: Biden Differs from Previous Administrations
Immigration: The difference between Biden and Trump
In November 2020, amid a global health crisis unprecedented in the recent history of mankind, the American population had to elect the next president of the US. The two strongest candidates were Joe Biden, belonging to the Democratic political party and Donald Trump, belonging to the Republican political party.
Despite Trump seeking a second term, local citizens elected the Democratic nominee, who took office on January 20, 2021 and is the country’s 46th president. Both Trump and Biden have different views on how the federal government should approach immigration.
On the one hand, former President Trump, since he took office in 2017, substantially increased restrictions and requirements to legally migrate to the US, and considerably reduced possibilities for undocumented immigrants to request legal permits or protection against deportation after crossing the borders without prior authorization. In his view, immigration is a burden on the economy and a threat to the American population, and therefore, the US government must reduce it at all costs.
On the other hand, President Biden, since launching his political campaign, referred to immigration with a positive connotation, stating that foreign workforce is extremely essential in times of crisis and contributes to the development of the US as a world power. Adding to that, Biden promised to offer alternatives for the most vulnerable immigrant communities such as asylum seekers and remove Trump’s restrictive policies on the immigration sector.

Immigration: The difference between Biden and other administrations
Aside from the Trump administration, Biden’s approach to immigration is also different from other administrations. It is important to remember that Joe Biden served as vice president during Barack Obama’s term.
Therefore, the president stated on multiple occasions that he plans to act differently so he does not make the same mistakes or follow the same steps as other administrations when it comes to immigration. In his opinion, the immigration system urgently needs a comprehensive reform, which must include policies consistent with the international interaction, trade and cooperation that is currently taking place.
During the first days of his term, Biden has reversed more than seven restrictions on the immigration system and ordered multiple entities such as DHS (Department of Homeland Security) to issue action plans to improve the immigration sector, including detention and deportation protocols both at the borders and within the US.
According to a recent CNN Politics report, the Biden administration is acting more efficiently and effectively than other governments that also proposed to reform the immigration system, such as the Obama administration and the Bush administration. This is mainly due to the fact that, for these two governments, immigration had a relevant place on their agendas during their second term.
On the contrary, immigration has always been a main issue for the Biden administration. The president-elect issued several memoranda and executive actions related to the immigration system from day one in office, including an immigration bill that could lead to comprehensive immigration reform. “That signals a very different level of commitment.”
