Immigration Demands Immediate Attention

HRW demands immediate attention for the immigration sector

HRW calls for immediate attention to the immigration sector

Human Rights Watch (HRW) is a non-partisan organization that investigates, reports, and intervenes in abuses that threaten the integrity of the most vulnerable communities. This organization works tirelessly for justice, human rights and equality.

HRW recently released a report called “2021 Domestic Transition Priorities for the Next US Administration”, where it lists 10 current issues that need government attention, dedication, and transformation.

As the presidential elections approach (November 2020), HRW proposes alternatives for the next leader of the nation and exposes current circumstances of vulnerable communities facing adverse and precarious situations in the US due to local policies.

Speaking specifically about the immigration sector, one of the most controversial issues in the country, HRW states that the government must address this issue immediately to prevent more immigrants from being victims of “serious abuses and harm.

This humanitarian organization mentions several aspects of immigration that must be taken into account by the next administration. Let’s see some of them:

1. Abuses by immigration or border agencies

HRW states that immigration or border entities such as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or Customs and Border Protection (CBP), have abused power granted by the federal government and have violated the integrity of immigrants detained at their facilities.

The organization assures that this would not happen and human rights would be respected by these entities if the administration of the US created “processes that increase transparency and accountability for abusive policies.

2. The separation of immigrant families at the borders

President Trump’s “Zero Tolerance Policy” has increased the separation of immigrant families at the US’ borders by classifying undocumented adults as criminals.

Hence, hundreds of immigrant minors have been separated from their families under the premise of zero tolerance. HRW proposes to eradicate this policy, avoid mass detention of undocumented immigrants and create “community-based case management programs for those with pending proceedings.”

3. Political asylum and refuge policies

HRW mentions the Migrant Protection Protocol (MPP), an immigration policy implemented by the Trump administration in 2019, which requires asylum seekers to remain in Mexico while they await responses to their immigration requests. In fact, this policy is also known as “Remain in Mexico.

This policy represents an imminent threat to asylum seekers since Mexico has a high percentage of violence and immigrants do not have resources or economic solvency to survive while their cases are resolved, so they currently live in temporary shelters, they are at the mercy of local gangs or natural disasters and survive thanks to donations from neighboring communities, humanitarian organizations or activists.

Therefore, HRW assures that immigration policies implemented in recent years have reduced possibilities for immigrants, mainly those who urgently need international protection, including unaccompanied minors.
