Immigration Remains a Priority for the Texan Population
Poll reveals that immigration is a priority for the Texan population
A poll recently carried out by the University of Texas and Texas Tribune (UT / TT) analyzes what are the priorities for the Texan population and the most important problems that the State is facing, also according to the vision of local citizens.
This poll took place between June 10 and 21, 2021 and included 1,200 registered voters. According to the results, 34% of respondents consider that both immigration and border protection are the biggest and most important problems facing the state.
This is not a surprise because, being a border state, Texas has been in the midst of the current border situation, which is threatening the Biden Administration’s immigration plans. To clarify, when we mention the current border situation, we are referring to a surge of illegal crossings that has taken place since the beginning of the year.
In fact, irregular migration levels were already increasing exponentially since the end of 2020, but the situation worsened since February 2021. The border apprehension rates of the last months (March, April and May) have already exceeded the numbers of the last decades, which undoubtedly unleashes controversy and uncertainty in border territory as Texas.
Let’s see the most important findings of the poll in relation to immigration:
- Immigration and border protection are a greater problem mainly for Texan Republican voters (59%).
- 57% of voters disapprove of the way the Biden administration is handling immigration and border protection, 89% of whom are Republican voters.
- 56% of Democratic voters approve of the way Biden is handling immigration and border protection.
- Speaking specifically about Texas Governor Greg Abbott, 46% of respondents approve of the way he is handling immigration and border protection, with 78% of Republican voters supporting this premise.
- 73% of Democratic voters disapprove of the way Abbott is handling immigration and border protection.
What could be the main conclusions of these findings?
Well, first of all it is important to analyze the main changes between the April poll and the June poll. In April, the UT and TT poll revealed that the global Coronavirus pandemic was still the top priority for Texan voters. Immigration and border protection were also an important issue for the local population in the April poll, but did not represent the biggest problem facing the state, unlike the most recent poll.
At this point it is worth mentioning that, over the past few weeks, Texas governor has been pushing the Biden administration to implement stricter border policies to stem the surge of illegal crossings. However, the Biden administration disagrees with strict policies and states that, above all, it is important to address the root causes of mass irregular migration in order to create lasting solutions.
In light of the difference of opinion, Governor Abbott recently stated that he plans to invest in the construction of the border wall that separates the US from Mexico and in border security.
Adding to that, it is important to analyze the fact that immigration and border protection are a major problem mainly for Texan Republican voters. In fact, regarding the results of the poll, the research director for the Texas Politics Project openly stated that “It reflects that this is becoming more of a Republican issue”.
