Immunization Difficulties Among Immigrant Communities

COVID-19 vaccine - Fear among immigrant communities

COVID-19 vaccine – Fear among immigrant communities

Over the past four years, the Trump administration has instilled fear among immigrant communities through multiple restrictions on the immigration system, strict policies, and almost unattainable requirements.

The message from former President Trump and his team was that immigrant populations, including those in need of international assistance to protect their lives and flee precarious situations, are not welcome in the US.

Therefore, his government tried to restrict immigration by all possible means, from humanitarian alternatives such as refuge or political asylum, to programs and options based on employment or family ties.

The repercussions of Trump’s restrictive policies on the immigration sector represent a gigantic challenge for the national vaccination project against the global Coronavirus pandemic. Immigrants, especially those residing in the US undocumented, fear receiving the COVID-19 vaccine and possibly facing deportation proceedings, risking their legal immigration status, or losing the opportunity to apply for permanent residence (Green Card) in the future.

In fact, according to a recent Kaiser Health News (KHN) report, most states in the country, especially those located in the south, are facing complications to immunize the local population, including undocumented immigrants.

According to KHN, a large portion of undocumented immigrants are essential workers such as farmers who work to bring food to the tables of American families, healthcare workers, construction specialists, inter alia. Therefore, if they do not receive the COVID-19 vaccine, the country would take longer to overcome the sanitary emergency.

Biden’s effort to include undocumented immigrants in vaccination project

Since President Biden took office on January 20, 2021, his team has emphasized the need to incorporate immigrant communities, including undocumented foreigners, in the national immunization program so that the US can overcome the current crisis and protect essential workers.

In fact, in early February, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that border agents from entities such as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) are not allowed to arrest undocumented immigrants at or near vaccination centers across the country.

Adding to that, health experts have openly expressed that patients’ personal information will not be shared with federal entities and that national immunization is essential to close this chapter and boost the economy.

However, because of what happened under the Donald Trump administration, essential foreign workers and immigrant communities fear receiving the vaccine and the government seizing the opportunity to deport them, a premise that has been contradicted multiple times by health providers, people leading vaccination centers and the Biden administration’s senior officials.
