Impatience Grows Among Immigrant Communities
Biden’s promises regarding the immigration system
The Trump administration undoubtedly marked the history of the US with its immigration policies, which substantially restricted processes available for foreigners to come to the country in times of crisis, globalization, and international cooperation.
The former president increased requirements and restrictions on immigration processes of all kinds, from humanitarian programs, to visas based on employment, family ties or study. His administration planned to further reduce and hamper immigration alternatives during his second term.
However, the American population elected the Democratic nominee, Joe Biden, as the country’s 46th president, who has a different view on immigration and states that the presence of foreigners from different cultures gives an exceptional and unique value to the US, which allows it to be a first-world country and a world power in sectors such as technology and science.
Therefore, one of the main goals of the Biden administration is to remove Trump’s restrictive policies on the local immigration system in order to expand alternatives available to foreign workers and the most vulnerable immigrant communities.

Biden’s first executive actions on the immigration system
Immigration is a priority for the Joe Biden administration. That is why, during his first days in office, the current president of the US issued multiple executive orders and memoranda to remove Trump’s immigration restrictions.
For instance, the Biden administration ended the construction of the border wall, suspended the MPP (Migrant Protection Protocol) or “Remain in Mexico” policy, rescinded Trump’s “Zero Tolerance Policy”, lifted some restrictions on the H-1B visa program for highly qualified foreign workers, introduced an immigration bill that would offer citizenship to millions of immigrants living in the US undocumented, inter alia.

Immigrant communities are getting impatient over Biden’s immigration promises
Despite the fact that the Biden administration has already fulfilled multiple promises regarding immigration and lifted several restrictions from the Trump administration, dozens of immigrants, mainly those under the MPP policy, are getting impatient because Biden has not permanently removed this policy, nor has he created refugee and asylee resettlement projects within the US.
To understand the issue at hand, it is important to clarify that the MPP policy requires asylum seekers to remain in Mexico until they receive a response to their immigration applications in the US. However, they do not always have access to basic services or social benefits and currently live in temporary shelters, often at the mercy of local gangs and without any guarantee for their future.
The Biden administration promised to remove this policy and implement a resettlement system to protect asylum seekers. However, President Biden also explained that these changes must be gradual and harmonious to avoid an immigration crisis within the US, which could take at least six months.
