Is the Era of Hardline Immigration Policy Over?
The Biden administration brought another vision regarding immigration
The US experienced a period of hardline immigration policies under the Donald Trump administration between 2017 and early 2021, something that had not happened in many years. Former President Trump set a record by making more than 400 changes to the immigration system, which undoubtedly restricted, limited, narrowed, and hindered most existing immigration processes.
In fact, one of the most striking aspects of Trump’s political campaign was his rhetoric regarding immigration and his vision regarding the US sovereignty and the border territory. Interestingly, the same thing happened during the November 2020 presidential election. One of the most striking aspects of Joe Biden’s political campaign, current president of the US, was also his stance on immigration and the important fact that it is diametrically opposed to Trump’s.
Thus, Biden’s arrival to the White House in January 2021 opened a door of hope for immigrant communities in the US as his administration has the firm intention to reform the entire immigration system, but this time to improve, expand and streamline immigration processes available to all kinds of foreign populations, from people in need of international protection such as asylum seekers, to high qualified workers and international students.

Has Biden been able to end the era of hardline immigration policies?
The Biden administration has made strides on the immigration sector and has managed to remove many restrictions implemented by the Trump administration. However, the current president has also encountered quite a few obstacles along the way, which has not allowed him to restructure the immigration system at the pace he would like.
On the one hand, most of Biden’s actions have been related to policies of his Republican predecessor and thus do not necessarily mean significant progress, but rather the reversal of multiple rules. On the other hand, the Biden administration has indeed been able to pursue several strategies that pave the way to improving certain immigration processes, especially those related to the most vulnerable immigrant communities such as asylum seekers, refugees and unaccompanied immigrant minors.
Looking at it from another perspective, the Biden administration has improved legal immigration processes despite facing gigantic challenges such as the surge of illegal border crossings, criticism from certain Republican leaders and opposition groups, and pressure from immigrant rights advocates.
Clearly, there is still a long way to go and Biden’s goals when it comes to the immigration sector are not easy nor will they happen overnight.
