Is There a Crisis at the US Borders?
The Biden administration receives criticism for immigration proposals
It’s no secret that President Joe Biden, who took office in late January 2021, supports immigration and plans to expand options available for foreigners to come to the US. In fact, the Biden administration has always emphasized the need to improve the local immigration system to integrate immigrant communities into the civilian structure and reduce discrimination.
However, his administration has also received countless criticism for the way in which it is approaching immigration because its message might create confusion among immigrant populations and could, according to expert opinion, increase the number of people arriving at the US borders from Central American territory and irregular immigration could also skyrocket. In fact, the number of unaccompanied immigrant minors apprehended by border forces has risen sharply in recent weeks.
Since President Biden won the November 2020 election, dozens of critics and opposition groups stated that his proposals would incentivize thousands of immigrants to reach the US borders amid the global Coronavirus pandemic, which could worsen the sanitary risk.
Aside from Biden’s immigration proposals, one must take into account other factors that could increase migration to the US. For instance, conditions in Central American countries are not the best due to the health crisis and several natural disasters, and the lack of employment opportunities also forces thousands of people to seek new alternatives in North America.
The Biden administration claims there is no border crisis
For several critics and members of the opposition, the Biden administration fueled a border crisis. However, current administration officials state that there is no crisis at the US borders and that Biden’s team is trying to handle the situation in the best way possible, using resources currently available and keeping in mind that we are still going through an unprecedented health emergency.
In fact, Alejandro Mayorkas, the Secretary of the DHS (Department of Homeland Security), who was also the director of the USCIS (US Citizenship and Immigration Services) during Barack Obama’s term, recently stated in a press conference that the country is not going through a border crisis, but that “there is a challenge at the border that we are managing, and we have our resources dedicated to managing it.”
However, several critics state that there is indeed a border crisis that arose due to the Biden administration’s message. President Biden and his cabinet, for their part, declare that they are using all the tools at their disposal to gradually improve the immigration system and offer more humane alternatives to the most vulnerable immigrant populations arriving at the US borders.
