It is Time for Congress to Review Immigration Proposals
Controversy within Congress does not solve the current border situation
The surge of illegal border crossings is not an issue that can be set aside or ignored by the current administration of the US. In fact, the number of border force encounters with unaccompanied immigrant minors is national news today, as is the way President Biden is dealing with the situation. The current condition at the borders is a growing controversy among the local population and members of Congress.
However, despite the fact that several members of Congress have expressed their opinions and raised their voices about the increase in illegal border crossings, especially when it comes to unaccompanied children, there has been no solution to the situation, but the controversy has been mainly related to criticism of the Biden administration instead of avenues of resolution that propose better alternatives to curb irregular immigration and protect the integrity of minors aprehended at the borders.
Although it is worth mentioning that several members of Congress have recently traveled to the borders to supervise protocols implemented by federal entities and have unveiled different immigration bills, there are still no responses from both branches of Congress (the US House of Representatives and the Senate) regarding how to deal with the situation at the borders and how to support the Biden administration to overcome the current juncture.

Congress must consider current immigration proposals
The growing controversy within Congress may not lead to the solutions necessary to control the current border situation and reduce massive illegal migration from Central America.
Therefore, a viable alternative to address the surge of illegal border crossings is for Congress to review current immigration proposals, including President Biden’s immigration bill, which would lead to comprehensive immigration reform. It is important to note that two immigration proposals introduced or reintroduced by members of Congress have already been approved by the House of Representatives, but are still under Senate review.
Apart from that, despite different opinions within Congress regarding Biden’s immigration proposals, the increase in illegal border crossings, and former President Trump’s immigration policies, it is imperative to create a bridge between the different opinions to work as a unit in the ideal of protecting the US borders without violating the human rights of the most vulnerable immigrant populations.
In fact, according to a recent Bangor Daily News report, “These two perspectives (Republicans vs Democrats) might be hard to bridge, but that is no excuse for Congress to continue to duck its responsibility to develop immigration policies that address both concerns for border security and for the humane treatment of migrants who are traveling to the U.S. border.”
